The Facts About Stained Teeth

Posted .

Have you noticed that after enjoying certain drinks, your mouth could be tinted the same color as the beverage? Luckily, this is generally a temporary status, but did you know that some drinks can lead to permanent stains? This can be especially problematic since most people strive to maintain a white, beautiful smile. To enjoy these benefits, it’s important to know what drinks you should be careful with.

For example, some people love to have a glass of wine at night. Unfortunately, red wine, while healthy for your heart and even your gums, can lead to tooth discoloration. Cold drinks, such as soda, will cause your teeth to become porous—often leading to a higher likelihood of stains. Similarly, coffee is the number one cause of teeth stains caused by beverages, especially if taken black. Fortunately, if you add just a little milk to your coffee you’ll be much less likely to stain your teeth.

Luckily, there are a few tricks you can follow to avoid these issues. For instance, drinking colored beverage through a straw can reduce staining. Similarly, if you rinse your mouth out with water after having a colored beverage, you can rinse the color and acid from your teeth.
